THE Public Services Department (PSD) will double the number of scholarships for undergraduates from next year.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said the increase in scholarships from 5,000 to 10,000 would be applied across the board in both critical and social sciences courses.

On a call to abolish the administrative costs for National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans and for them to be disbursed without any charges, interest or fees, Mustapa explained that the Employees Provident Fund was providing loans to PTPTN at 5%.

Out of this, he said students had to pay an administrative cost of 3% (as part of their loan repayments) with the Government subsidising the remaining 2%.

The cost of a college education has risen to unthinkable levels over the last two decades. Few parents have the extra cash on hand to cover these costs, so student loans and mounting debt have become a reality for many students. A HOST of successful Malaysian entrepreneurs gathered at the residence of New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia David Kersey in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The group, who are part of the (Christ-church) Alumni, were there to commemorate the launch of a scholarship. The , for Malaysian students, will be funded by the alumni through a fund set up by the university.
