THE Public Services Department (PSD) will double the number of scholarships for undergraduates from next year.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said the increase in scholarships from 5,000 to 10,000 would be applied across the board in both critical and social sciences courses.
“These scholarships are meant to help students who do well,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby.
On another matter, the four research universities (Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia) and Universiti Teknologi Mara will receive an allocation of at least RM400mil from the overall RM12bil allocation.
Mustapa said this allocation for research, development, innovation and commercialisation would benefit the nation as many products of research could eventually be commercialised.
The minister also said the cost of living allowance would be doubled by up to 97% for PSD scholarship students in the United States, Britain and Canada.
He said this was in line with the revisions in some other countries, especially in view of the increased cost of living.
In addition, Mustapa said community colleges would undergo a rebranding exercise.
